More than 20,000 people gathered on "a bright, cold day in April" for the big Hands Off rally at the State Capitol.
"A bright cold day in April" is also in the opening line of George Orwell's 1984.
Everything was peaceful and generally jolly. Penny Cooper was maybe a tiny bit disappointed I didn't need the matches, but it proved my point:
I didn't need them precisely because I brought them!
Most photos by bink---it was very windy and I had my hands full holding up my sign. (bink didn't carry a sign because she needed her hands free to hand out her zines.)
Many signs referenced the founding of the United States, one way or another, or the Constitution--and there were lots of non-ironic US flags.
BELOW: "We the People ... HATE FASCISM.
If not dictator why dictator shaped?"
[take off on meme "if not friend why friend shaped?"–with a photo of cute but dangerous animal]
"How many Teslas should we throw into Boston Harbor"
[My "No Kings" cat to the right]
Lots of take-offs on NO KINGS---here with a hammer and sickle.
I love the highly local and personal.
"MN LOVES A FISH FRY
ELON MUSKIE"
"Muskie" is a game fish, you know?

I wish I'd asked this painter her name...
In summary:
WE FUCKING HATE DONALD TRUMP
WE FUCKING HATE DONALD TRUMP
great posters! we had "don't be a doge bag!" lots of hands off. here we probably had around 800-1000 people. some observations: lots of honking cars of support with the occasional honking with the finger. one car with the driver waving a 2020 t flag while he was driving - no cops then as that is impaired driving. at least 3 cops circling the streets. and most protestors were 40 years old and up. one of my friends said her high school and college kids are blase about the whole thing. there were some younger people but few and far between. lots of people who looked like they were in the 60's protesting. the ages might depend upon where you live. of course, our local drinking area is having a rodeo on the streets tonight so that is their priority!! along with binge drinking.

Thanks for all the great links you sent me, k!!! So encouraging!
DeleteThank you Francesca, from the bottom of my heart.
ReplyDeleteOh, I thought I’d reply to this – – I said you are very welcome – –
Deleteit’s an honor and a privilege, isn’t i? to be able to do things for one another, as we are willing and able! ❤️
Corporate media has not touched the demonstrations- BBC has but only slightly- typical in this dictatorship where the powers that be are pooping their pants , in fear of the orange Game show host. Your signs are the best I have seen- and 20,000 people gathered together without some one getting shot is commendable. In our little town 4,000 showed up, the signs were small and dumb and the so called band was corny as hell, BUT A+ on the sentiment and community effort.
ReplyDelete4000 in a small town like Bellingham – – that’s great!
DeleteDid you go?
Marz went to the one in Duluth and it was about 2500 people – – it’s like really good energy though, and some fun signs.
I really go for the signs, to tell the truth!
DeletePS. Bellingham’s population is only 5000 people more than Duluth!
"Everything was peaceful and generally jolly" - happy for that. I heard the same for our local gathering.
ReplyDeleteI was glad to be prepared, and even more glad it turned out I didn’t need to be!
