I. Boots on the Ground
Now that I have seen actual boots on actual ground,
it is time for me to get more serious about changing up my Tech Life.
Last year, getting off Tech for Trump after his inauguration was mostly symbolic. Not that symbols aren't powerful, but it felt remote, like The Cloud (not a cloud).
Now I have seen real human beings in combat gear on my streets,
the power of Big Tech is not remote.
Not even remotely.
I know I'm highly emotional about this topic (practically shaking, writing about about it---as well as remaining perfectly rational);
so before I make any final move, like closing down my blogspot blog (here), I am going to jump on February's
Resist & Unsubscribe [< NPR]
Boycott of Big Tech industries.
There's only one week left in February, as of today––
but tomorrow is the first Sunday of Lent.
Perfect!
I will fast from Google for 6 weeks
--from tomorrow, Sunday, February 22, until Sunday, April 5, 2026 (Easter Sunday).
That includes youTube, and here, Blogger.
(I closed my accounts with the other companies last year, or I never used them in the first place. I own Apple tech, and when the time comes to replace it, I'll get something else.)
I'll take these weeks to switch over completely to Proton mail. (I never did the work of changing my accounts for gas & electric, for instance.)
II. INSTEAD . . .
I am going to do what I am always saying I am going to do (and then don't because I write so much of most-everything here, on my blog):
Send paper mail.
To friends, but also to people I don't know to say thank you,
or to say, please stop doing that.
* * * Shall I send you something in the mail?
Let me know in the comments.
I just enabled COMMENT MODERATION,
so if I don't already have your address, you can leave it in a comment, and I won't post that comment.
Overseas is OK. I even have old aerograms! Look:And a flying dino ^ 25¢ stamp, which I'm going to use to write to Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, to tell him I'm boycotting his company.
Like he'll care.
But the stamp might amuse the underling who reads his mail.
Here's Pichai, below, center, at Trump's 2nd inauguration, 2025.
(As you know, left is Amazon's Jeff Bezos; right is Elon Musk.)
You never know what impact you'll have.
Maybe none.
But I know I will have an impact on me, myself.
And that's where I live.

III. Meanwhile, I am happy, happy, happy! to see these developments...
1. A thousand+ Google employees petitioned Google stop supporting ICE [Guardian article] with Cloud Services, to end contracts, etc.
2. Yesterday the US Supreme Court ruled that Trump had overstepped in tariffs.
I didn't know if the Court would ever rule against him.
3. The day before that, you'll have seen the photo:
He's-No-Prince Andrew of GB was arrested, with his brother, King Charles, giving "whole-hearted" support to the law.
Hooray for Law! It is codified human intelligence. (Not that it's perfect––neither is our intelligence.)
______________
Okay, then.
I feel lighter and happier, having made this decision to boycott Google.
I HATED knowing I was in any way supporting a company that actively helped agents to do evil in my own city--and the country.
And the world!
So... It's good for me to take time to discern. Do I want to...
Stay on Blogger?
Quit blogging?
Move elsewhere?
I'll post in 6 weeks and say what I've decided.
Meanwhile--mail me a letter, eh?
Thanks, everyone--sparkle on!
Now, that's walking the walk! Go you!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Boud. I am kinda weak-brained about techy stuff, and I don't like making this sort of effort, but I feel sick about supporting these bastards!
DeleteThe effort is worth it.
You might want to delete this comment but in conversation with my brother recently he quoted LBJ who responded to questions about an unsavory alliance that it was "probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in". Not that I'm recommending alliances with big tech but lots of very ordinary people have pension savings invested in tech companies. I have only just found you on blogger and will miss your posts so assure us that you are not disappearing completely. I'd give you my email address (we don't really have working postal - hence reliance on tech that works) but it's yahoo which probably constitutes big tech too. I just hope when you post again in 6 weeks you have found a working alternative (is Wordpress an option?) best wishes for your voyage of exploration and discovery. Maybe some of we the less bold or less motivated will follow in your steps once a path is opened for us. D
ReplyDeleteNice to know you too, TMπ
DeleteI’m not boycotting all big tech, nor am I boycotting people who use it—I’m not going to stop emailing people who use Gmail or yahoo or anything!
Yes, big tech is deep into the lives of “very ordinary people” – – like cucumber vines, wrapped tight around anything in reach.
….Same as cars or historical unsavory economic “necessities” of the past.
Everyone has to decide for themselves where they draw the line.
Or , let the cucumber π₯ decide.
π
drop me an email when you sort the new email address please..meanwhile I can write π
ReplyDeleteThanks—I will mail you a printed card, GZ! ❤️
DeleteBecause I am selfish and I love your blog I want you to keep doing it...emails are OK , hand written letters are difficult to write these days. but are thrilling to receive. I am keeping you tube and instagram , it is how i get real people news and concerns/ ART - algorithm complies, of course. Yes they are all bastards, every one of them- we will come up with an alternative , but not in the next five minutes! Blogging is different than email- I prefer it mostly because I can embiggen everything . I could pull the plug on everything ...but won't, my life would not improve , I don;t think...OR maybe it would, how will I know if I do not do as you are doing? I do love the handy library right here at finger tips, looking up history and EVERYTHING . Our town library is closing.
ReplyDeleteI use Firefox, seems to be honest, non profit search engine.
Yes, our tech has got us over a barrel alright!
DeleteAs we’ve turned to it, we’ve lost the brick-and-mortar options, and now we’re stuck.
Of course there’s a ton of good stuff online too, but I hate to see the loss of physical alternatives.
Your town library??? Yikes!
And,
Is it Denmark that is giving up its postal service?
I grieve leaving Blogger, where I’ve blogged for 17+ years;
but its direct connection to ICE is too much for me.
I will try Wordpress, which looks relatively benign (no ICE,
no million$ to Trump,
no AI).
(I don’t like substack).
Going for Harm reduction,
not perfect purity!
PS. Firefix uses Google as its default search engine—
Deleteyou have to switch to another search engine (like DuckDuckGo) within Firefox

Oh, my friend! That is π perfect.
Delete“Enjoy the Silence:
words are very unnecessary “.
I shall get out my folding chair
and go look at a tree.
This also shows how hard it is to get entirely off Google – –
I had to go watch that on YouTube! Which google owns.
But I’m not going to be harsh and rigid about this – –
I really love that you sent that, k
– – thank you!
