The lakeside commissary is open for a few more days, so I did indeed get my last grilled cheese and beer of the season.
Gorgeous sunny day, warmed up into the 60s. I walked home through the rose garden—their fountains are also still on for this week.
Then I went to the hardware store and bought potting soil. I took the bus five blocks so I only had to carry the heavy bag the last two blocks home.
And now instead of one huge fern, I have four medium ferns. I hope they all survive – – I ripped the plant apart, as it seemed like it could tolerate it, according to online advice— https://thisismygarden.com/2024/09/divide-save-ferns-fall —but if any of them don’t make it, I won’t be heartbroken since I don’t know where I’m gonna put all these plants!
Soon I’ll get ready to go to the meet-and-greet a mayoral candidate evening. I even did some research, reading about the candidates— from local political analyst and science fiction author, Naomi Kritzer. naomikritzer.com/2025/09/18/election-2025-minneapolis-mayoral-race-the-four-contenders
oh my, that is exactly what i was going to suggest. taking the fern apart into smaller plants rather than one larger plant. you can always give some away..... i was thinking about how we put off doing tasks that always end up taking so much less time than we thought and wonder if it's due to we tend to make the task larger than it really is in our minds. i have 2 cashmere sweaters that need mending and probably would take less than an hour to do both yet they remain in the pile to do after 5 years. with your fern as an example i'm going to get them mended this weekend to that i can wear them this winter!!!
ReplyDeletegrilled cheese and beer outside what a great reward.

Lol, K., You’re absolutely right that I put this off a month longer than I should’ve, and then it really wasn’t a big deal – – I didn’t really need 30 pounds of soil – – and it only took me about an hour to chop up the fern! I sure do hope I wasn’t too rough with it! It’s not supposed to drop below freezing for the next week, so I hope the ferns can take root in their new pots before I have to bring them in.
DeletePS. Yes, tackle that Cashmere! Good luck with it 😃
