Why are halfway decent companies caving without a fuss to the New Emperor?
When I heard Target is rolling back their DEI, I immediately thought, I'm not shopping there. Starting NOW.
I don’t know why this Target boycott waits to starts Feb 1––maybe to give everybody time to go to Target and stock up?! 😄
This feels personal to me--Target is based in my city and has been a good ally.
And then, some people online are saying,
But there's nowhere else to shop!
But... Let's show some initiative. Our ancestors didn't have Target. What are our options?
Like toilet paper… There are several.
1. Order tp from sustainable or recycled materials--from Who Gives a Crap or another good company.
Former Housemate ordered these, and they're just dandy. They offer bamboo tp too, which is softer than recycled tree paper.
Order a batch with friends and share.

2. It's more expensive than Target, yes, so to save money and the environment. . .
Make cloth wipes instead of
toilet paper (or paper towels). Use flannel, old T-shirt material, light washcloths--whatever does the job.
There are patterns for sewing cute cloth wipes, but I just cut up flannel with pinking sheers. I leave the squares unhemmed, and I launder the wipes in a net bag.
(I only use them for pee, so I still buy tp, but far less.)
Also, rinse your backside with warm water in a squeeze bottle.
(Folks chit-chat about tp alternatives, here at Homesteading and Permaculture.)
My motivations were environmental, after I wrote a kids book about toilet history and learned how much tp we put in our waters. I'm sure you know--besides pollution, it takes a lot of water to make tp, not to mention trees. From 2014:
We started using "who gives a crap" bamboo paper in part as a little family joke because we have been battling invasive bamboo in our garden for years - another way to fight back! Or we just have a peculiar sense of humor. As it turns out we liked it and during tp shortages it was a relief to not worry about stores running out. My husband then installed bidets (not an option for everyone but wow that heated seat in the winter......) and that cuts down on tp use too. All this to say there are options out there to explore - maybe the Target boycott will inspire some creativity beside feeling like the right thing to do on several levels.

Yay! I wish I had a bidet, but like much of the non-Western world, I use a pitcher to pour warm water on my backside to wash off.
DeleteINSPIRE CREATIVE OPTIONS--right?
We are a creative species--we don't need everything done for us.
never thought i would spend monday am reading about toilet paper and bathroom habits...; ) i have gone to only using 3 squares.
ReplyDeletewhy wait until feb. 1 to quit target. several people i know have quit amazon. never been an amazon shopper -- either find it locally, at some other business or figure out how to do without. if it costs more that's okay. i used to love target and spent a lot of money there but once they started copying designers i really reduced my shopping there.
k
Body wastes are still taboo!
DeleteFunny, eh?
"I don't use Amazon much" I've said for years--
but now decided to drop that down to "not ever"--
* * * and write and tell them so too!
I too loved Target--but not now.
Erik bought two bidets for us years ago. 60 bucks each. Mr. Man does not use them because he is addicted to TP and zip lock bags, one use... probably from his medical training and life in a sterile obsessed environment. Anyway, Good for you ! I am onboard. There are no shops here and it has become difficult to get certain things so amazon is the buggaboo. I try to order from companies directly rather than using Besso. Amazon is my last go to.
ReplyDeleteI love Ziploc bags – – are they the best? One day will look back and say we can’t believe we have these miraculous magical things that we use once instead of worshiping and treasuring forever!
DeletePS Ihave those reusable “ziplocks” now—you have to WASH them! Such a pain! 🙄
Delete😆❤️
I used Who Gives a Crap bamboo..the softest and best we found as Pirate used a lot....we had a subscription, so I'm working my way through a large box and a half...😎
ReplyDeleteAnd Pee cloths..so useful in the bathroom for other things too..wiping the sink down after use for one! A habit we picked up in NZ.. I cut up old thin hand towels in 4" squares and bound the edges , they last longer that way and no edge fibres lost in the wash and down the drain..
Ah, you’ll have enough bamboo loo roll for years!
DeleteDefinitely love having cloth wipes for spills —I am a bad spiller-of—coffee (or, rather, a good one), and for art messes…
Good point about edge fibers—next time I cut up new wipes I’ll hem them.
Another thing we may be buying but don't need to is panty liners for that pee problem. Mine are washable, have been for fifteen years or so.
ReplyDeleteBravo! And there are washable period pads too. (And diapers of course.)
DeleteMy goodness, we’ve had a long and luxurious run of products that make life easier… but not without cost to the environment
