The Bee-Man of Orn (1887), by Frank R. Stockton was a favorite story of mine when I was a kid. We had the version illustrated by Maurice Sendak.
The gist of the story is, a young sorcerer determines that if a slovenly bee-keeper he happens to meet were given a chance to live his life again, the man would grow up into something else (better).
So the sorcerer turns the Bee-man back into a baby.
But when the sorcerer returns years later...
"Upon my word!" exclaimed the Sorcerer, "He has grown into the same thing again!"
