In 1936, two lovers, photojournalists, and Jewish émigrés in Paris––André Friedmann and Gerta Pohorylle––changed their names: his to Robert Capa, hers to Gerda Taro. Both documented the Spanish Civil War, from the front lines. She died in 1937, at the age of twenty-six, when a tank ran into a car she was in. He died in 1954, at the age of forty, when he stepped on a landmine in Vietnam. “If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough.”--Robert Capa
Thanks for this link! I got very interested in Tina Modotti a while back (another woman photographer of the period who also ended up working on the Republican side in Spain, but not as a photographer!), so I will have to look for this book after New Year's--maybe the public library will get it. the slide show with the artcile is amazing.
Hey! I thought of Modotti too--maybe I'll post a photo of her too, later, since I don't have the brain space to write something original lately.... And since she's so beautiful.
