Anti-War Rally, March 15, 2008

The kid who made this sign gets my vote for Best Idea Ever.

The marchers stream into the Park, on a not-very-nice Saturday afternoon.

Stef ^ We used to run into each other at anti-nuke marches in this same park twenty years ago.

After five years of war, I sense the public is tired of the topic. A lot of today's participants are Old Lefties and Church folk, who tend to be in it for the long haul.

And young people, who are just getting started...
I started out up on the bridge, connecting Park to the Sculpture Garden, so I could get a good view. I learned this trick in 1977, from Sara Hummel: Always walk at the front of the march, she said, so at the end you can turn around and have the pleasure of seeing everyone else arrive.
Like Emma Goldman, Sara also always carried something to read.

On the bridge, families of vets.

Coffin top: baby boots to soldier boots.

"Who Would Jesus Waterboard?"

A good idea: Cops on Bikes.

"Post-partum Nurse for Peace"

Calling for war-crime trials at the International Court of Justice at The Hague. There were a lot of dogs present. One woman told me her dog was a member of Poodles for Peace. (Why didn't I take their photo?)

On the bridge, above the speakers.

Sami Rasouli ^ speaking. This Iraqi-American man ran Sinbad restaurant in my neighborhood for 25 years. He returned home to Najaf, Iraq, after the fall of Saddam to try to work for peace and to rebuild his country.

UPDATE
: Interview with Rasouli on Democracy Now, March 2023.

Tomorrow is Palm Sunday, when crowds cheered Jesus as he entered Jerusalem for Passover. These church people were passing out palm fronds.
This ties in with my idea that church people don't expect quick results--and tend not to be surprised when people cheer one day and jeer the next.

Many peace-and-justice types seem to dress in purples and blue-greens. Here, squishing the air out of the inflatable Earth ball, so they can take it back home.
Until next time.
